Walker the Jeweller
Located on Dundee’s historic Union Street, the expansion and renovation of Walker the Jeweller redefines luxury retail within a B-listed early 19th-century tenement block. This project connects the existing store with the adjacent unit, creating an elegant, cohesive retail space while reviving the buildings architectural heritage. Lighting plays a pivotal role in balancing modern refinement with the existing Victorian features, enhancing both the architectural character and the jewellery display experience. Lighting is integral to creating a welcoming and inviting retail environment.
Instead of external illumination, the store’s interior lighting spills outward, enhancing street presence and drawing attention to the carefully restored Carrara marble facade and black hardwood timber framing. The warm glow from within highlights the store’s elegance, reinforcing its presence on Union Street while respecting the surrounding conservation areas. Internally, a curated lighting scheme enhances both the retail experience and the display of fine jewellery.
A delicate balance of warm and cool lighting mimics the natural brilliance of diamonds and gemstones, ensuring that each piece is showcased with clarity and depth. Ambient lighting softens the space, while spotlighting within bespoke display cases adds focus and drama, enhancing the luxurious atmosphere. A reimagined window display, carefully lit from within, increases street engagement and strengthens the brand’s visual identity. Sustainability is central to the lighting strategy, with energy-efficient LED systems reducing operational impact while preserving the elegance and warmth of the interior.
By leveraging natural light during the day and employing low-energy, high-performance lighting solutions, the design ensures long-term efficiency and reduced carbon footprint. Walker the Jeweller – Phase II is a benchmark for luxury retail lighting, merging heritage, sustainability, and modern innovation. The result is an immersive retail environment that not only elevates the jewellery showcase experience but also reaffirms the brand’s status in Dundee’s historic heart and as a leading Jeweller in Scotland.
