Hillside Gardens Lane

Hillside Gardens Lane
2017
In 2013 Hoskins Architects undertook a feasibility study for Partickhill Bowling Club, exploring options to revitalise their clubhouse and grounds. In order to provide funds to improve its facilities, the Club decided to release an unused area of the grounds for development.

Set in the heart of Glasgow’s historic West End conservation area, the Hillside Gardens Lane development comprises six townhouses and associated gardens for client Noah Developments. The scheme is composed of a linear terraced block, which forms a transition between the existing surrounding tenements and the villas / mews buildings.

The building completes the unfinished urban block, enclosing and framing the existing bowling green and the clubhouse pavilion building. The scheme uses a limited palette of high-quality materials – predominantly brick. The façade is articulated by a series of bays, and has large vertically-oriented openings with deep reveals, which evoke the solidity o f the surrounding tenements.

The landscaped gardens act as a buffer between the houses and the bowling green, and create a new communal space that is shared between the residents of the townhouses and the Bowling Club members.
