Inverness Castle transformation to create a hub of Highland history

Inverness Castle's transformation into a Highland visitor hub has been given form by new concept art illustrating what the changes mean in practice.
New drawings prepared by interior designers Mather & Co show how the former prison will transform from a place where its occupants are desperate to leave into one people will be clamouring to get in by incorporating dynamic lighting, educational displays and landscaping.
Illustrations show how the gardens and South Tower could look once glowing standing stones and an airy roof terrace are installed when the landmark reopens in 2025. Inside changes will be no less dramatic with castle rooms transformed into a series of themed immersive environments, transporting visitors from forest glades to warm camp fires as a backdrop for audio-visual projections and actors to recount Highland history.
Mather & Co CEO Chris Mather said: "We want visitors to be amazed and surprised by the incredible stories collected and to be inspired to step out into the Highlands to find and create their own stories. "Our work aims to showcase the rich heritage of the Highlands as well as the Castlehill itself."
The project team includes heritage architects LDN with landscape architects Optimised Environments.
