Morningside garden annexe alterations win approval

Edinburgh planners have given the go-ahead to the refurbishment and alteration of a semi-detached villa at Cluny Drive in Edinburgh's

Morningside to take full advantage of a rear garden. DSArchitecture proposes to demolish an existing sunroom and cut a large new opening to the rear elevation to open up garden views. An adjoining annexe will be given a complementary makeover through internal reorganisation, an altered roof and the addition of zinc cladding.

In a statement DSArchitecture director Dugald Skene said: "The design sees the integration of the existing annex with the original villa while retaining the facility to be kept independent, and providing a more contemporary aesthetic, opening the space up to the south-facing garden."

Awarding consent the planning officer wrote: "The proposed works to the dwelling will preserve the character and appearance of the conservation area and are in accordance with the Development Plan. The works are compatible with the existing dwelling and surrounding neighbourhood character and will not result in an unreasonable loss of neighbouring amenity. There are no material considerations which indicate that the proposal should be refused."

I clearly don’t get it, especially the proportions of that slapping/ window split vs the original elevation composition.
Also why the rural form and detail?…would look ok on Skye.

Look like a nice scheme. I just wish there was more consistency over this sort of thing by CEC. If you land on the wrong side of some NIMBY's and it goes to Committee then the Kangaroo Court will throw it out on a whim. Hey ho...Edinburgh.

This is lovely, but is Edinburgh City not a smoke control zone?

Shocked to see the Architectural Society of Scotland object to this proposal, said no one ever!
