Pitlochry lodge house to cater for neglected budget golf market
February 22 2022
Plans for a 23-bedroom holiday lodge in Pitlochry have been lodged by Fearne Macpherson Architects, as part of efforts by a local golf club to expand its tourism offer.
Red Deer Lodge is to be operated by Pitlochry Golf, standing alongside an existing clubhouse, driving range and shop to deliver a 'golf on the doorstep' experience.
Intended as a haven for outdoor enthusiasts such as ramblers, mountain bikers and cyclists, as well as golfers, the lodge will cater to customers excluded from a focus on five-star accommodation prevalent in golf resorts.
In a statement, Pitlochry Golf wrote: "The PGL directors have identified a gap in the market for ‘golfer friendly’ accommodation and the opportunity to develop a golf resort in the mid-market space. Presently the golf resort offering is almost entirely served by five-star accommodation across Scotland, excluding many keen golfers from Scotland, the UK and beyond."
Targetting the 'shoulder seasons' outwith the peak summer months and winter low period the lodges will cater for a resurgent hospitality market that has now returned to pre-Covid levels.

Just because the existing buildings have red roofs, it doesn't mean you can apply that palette indiscriminately. Part of the reason the existing buildings get away with it is their interesting vernacular size and style - the traditional post-war cladding thing looks fine, cute even.
The new building though, is a chunky hooligan of a Travel Lodge, complete with corner hips and double-width dormers. It can’t get away with wearing the clothes of its more refined neighbour. It’s like James Corden trying one of Matt Horne's suits - it just doesn’t fit.
You wouldn’t put lipstick on a bulldog would you? Get some slate on there pronto!
