£35m Musselburgh riverfront apartments break ground

Dundas Estates have broken ground on the delivery of 140 homes (11 classed as affordable) at the site of an old mill in Musselburgh, East Lothian.

The £35m Wireworks development will transform the brownfield industrial site alongside the River Esk with a series of riverfront apartment blocks designed by Michael Laird Architects.

Craig Fairfoull, head of sales & marketing said: “Our team has analysed the site in detail and have been inspired by the historical importance of the wireworks site, and as such have ensured we draw upon the factory as inspiration in our designs.

“One such detail is the extensive use of brickwork throughout the development. Not only is it durable and lends to a contemporary look, but it draws on the factory’s design and use of brick."

Homeowners will have access to internal and external bike stores, electric charging facilities as well as private gardens and balconies with selected apartments.

Formerly the site of the old Brintons Wire Mill, a specialist provider of parts for the aviation industry, the historic mill was closed in the 1990s - although the business itself remains in operation at new premises a short distance away.

Affordable to who? People on low income for RENT ONLY.
Affordable housing is a failed scheme driving prices up to compensate for lost profit from AH parts of the development.

Missing some chimneys. That would have really added to the scheme, if they wanted to "draw on the past". 11/140 is low. I wonder what deal they struck to get that number?
