Motherwell transport interchange cleared for summer start

North Lanarkshire Council has named Balfour Beatty as its preferred contractor to redevelop Motherwell Station in a £14.5m revitalisation project - part of a wider investment plan for the region.

Standing as a new gateway to the town the Mott MacDonald designed project will deliver enhanced public realm around the station entrance to minimise congestion and improve links between bus and train services.

The refurbishment will include a new forecourt beneath a glazed roof with an enlarged concourse and improved passenger facilities.

Kirsty Devlin, ScotRail head of projects, said: “The improved integration of transport services and infrastructure will transform the relationship between the station and the town centre.

“It will open up a wealth of possibilities for Motherwell, creating more options and better connections for our customers; for business and leisure travel, and encourage more people to travel in a low-carbon way. It will create a gateway to Glasgow and beyond.”

Delivered in partnership with SPT, Transport Scotland and ScotRail the project will be delivered in two phases with Balfour Beatty moving on site in the summer for the main station redevelopment, prior to complementary public realm works following the year after.

That is woeful, surely we need a M&S or 3* budget hotel to make it a real station. Who's going to clean that glass?

I find this scheme to be utterly offensive at every level including the descriptive text. From opening up a wealth of opportunities to a gateway to Glasgow. What utter mince.

Horrendous overcladding job and a public realm and roads proposal which is just piles on the agony for the town that design forgot.
