Dundee’s jute legacy protected by apartments plan

Brunton Design has submitted plans to overhaul Dundee’s B-listed Baxter’s Mill to form 24 apartments arranged around a central lightwell, with a ‘loft style’ upper level benefitting from expansive views across the River Tay and surrounding city.

The former jute mill is the oldest such structure at Lower Dens Works, once the largest linen mill complex in the world, but had latterly been in use as a vehicle repair workshop before falling into disrepair.

In a statement, the architects wrote: “The building is category B-Listed so the application is the culmination of dialogue with the planning department and Historic Environment Scotland – all of whom were keen to see the building re-used and could not have been more helpful.”

New uses have already been found for other parts of the complex, notably conversion of an A-listed neighbor to form a Hotel Indigo hotel.
