Housing renewal to redraw Ayr's skyline

South Ayrshire Council has taken a unanimous decision to press ahead with the demolition of three tower blocks at Riverside Place, Ayr, following a tenant consultation which found 51.7% in favour of a new build solution.

The decision clears the way for the construction of 90 new homes at the riverfront site which will be offered to all 210 existing households in the first instance.

Intrusive investigations uncovered a number of issues with the windows, cladding system and pitched roof which would have required remediation in any refurbishment, dissuading councillors from pursuing a refurbishment plan backed by 46% of residents.

Councillor Philip Saxton commented: "New accommodation on the site allows the Council to provide properties which are more accessible, in line with the latest building standards and can be adapted to suit the future needs of our tenants.

"In the meantime, we will continue to support our tenants, and we will be writing to them to let them know that their living arrangements will not change in the short term.”

The council will now activate an implementation plan which will go before councillors in November.
