Glasgow office refurbishment meets supply shortfall

A bid to upgrade an existing office block at 55 Douglas Street, Glasgow, has drawn a £12m commercial loan from the Scottish Partnership for Regeneration in Urban Centres, enabling creation of a 10,000sq/ft extension.

Upon completion this November the refurbished building will offer 85,000sq/ft of floorspace, helping to bridge an expected shortfall in supply this year.

Michael Laird Architects have been commissioned to oversee the overhaul, which will allow formation of larger, more regular, floorplates backed by an all new look façade and double-height reception.

Gareth Richardson, director of asset management at Signal Capital, commented: “The current lack of high-quality Grade A office space in Glasgow has given us the confidence to invest significantly in the 55 Douglas Street project.”

A focus on ‘wellness’ will also see the installation of showers rooms, a cycle repair station, electric vehicle charge points and Amazon lockers.

The design team includes Clark Contracts, Hulley & Kirkwood and Etive Consulting.

Such an eyesore of a building. Looks like a giant blow up of something meant for the plant room.
