Health science building boosts Inverness Campus

Inverness Campus is set for further expansion with submission of a proposal of application notice to build a new healthcare and life sciences building stretching to approximately 8,500sq/m.

Backed by NHS Highland, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and the University of the Highlands & Islands the Centre for Life Sciences 2 is being designed by Oberlanders to maintain momentum from a recently completed Centre for Health Science.

Upon completion in 2021 the building will include a £34m elective care centre housing 28 inpatient beds as well as operating theatres, day case and outpatient facilities.

It will also house a life sciences innovation centre to drive clinical research and a business incubator to foster commercial applications and attract existing businesses operating in the life science sector to make use of the laboratory and office space in question.

These three components will intersect around an ‘open innovation space’ designed to encourage interactions between partners and companies.

I like how Oberlanders have managed to look at the context of the adjacent buildings and campus before completely ignoring them to cram in a scheme that is totally out of place. I would have though a more conservative stlye of cladding would have been better, as this will only attract the eye to a staggeringly bland elevation.

Report Card: C. Architect must review Univerity notes again and be less distracted by bright colours.
