Greenock Arts Centre takes shape
A new £7.8m arts centre designed by LDN Architects is taking shape on the Greenock Waterfront.

The Beacon Arts Centre, developed by the Greenock Arts Guild, is being developed by structural engineers Buro Happold and contractors Graham Construction.

Situated on east India Harbour, adjacent to the historic Custom House, the new building is designed to act as a community focus for the waterfront.

To that end it will accommodate a 500 seat auditorium, 130 seat studio theatre, three large rehearsal rooms, restaurant and bar.
It will also entail in-filling of a former dry dock to become a sunken garden with views across the marina. The bulk of the the accommodation is arranged as a simple rectangular box, lent profile through prominence of the main fly tower.

Jointly financed by the Guild, Scottish Arts Council, Inverclyde Council, Riverside Inverclyde and the Big Lottery Fund the scheme is scheduled to open in Summer 2012.

Beacon Arts Centre complements work to renovate a series of derelict sugar sheds on the nearby James Watt Dock through a partnership between the Peel Group and Inverclyde Council.

This aims to inject fresh life into the former industrial area with pontoons, moorings, leisure facilities, homes and retail space.

What was wrong with converting & extending the adjacent custom house building?
Doesn't seem a good idea to site an arts centre on reclaimed land by the river when keeping water out of the essential basement storage will be an ongoing problem
However, practicalities aside, what do the form and materials of this centre specifically have to do with Greenock? Answer, SFA
