Murphy back for Haymarket round two

Murphy back for Haymarket round two
Richard Murphy Architects are working on a revised design for the Haymarket, Edinburgh, after the previous scheme for a 17 storey hotel tower was withdrawn.

That design had been strongly criticised by UNESCO for adversely impacting upon the Edinburgh’s World Heritage sites but Tiger Developments are keen to come back for a second attempt.

It was a watershed moment in the eternal battle of heritage vs. modernity and all eyes will now be on the practice to see whether they stick to their guns in reaching for the skies or kow tow to history.

The practice will submit a planning application “in due course.”

No, it wasn't about heritage v modernity, it was about the fact that the plans were passed against the council's own policies, and the tower was too tall for where it was to be sited.

They have no choice but to 'kow tow' to adopted policies, or face another inquiry. Hopefully both Tiger and Edinburgh Council have learned lessons from the inquiry report.

And ... the scheme was not withdrawn, it was REFUSED PERMISSION by the government. That's the entire Haymarket scheme, not simply the Tower.

Should this land not be considered first for a High Speed Rail terminus?
