New Town aparthotel undergoes a light touch shift

Proposals to alter and extend a historic former warehouse, latterly in use as offices, in Edinburgh's New Town have been pared back by 3DReid.

Updated documents show the removal of a top floor of accommodation to work within the confines of the current brick building, served by a contemporary brick staircase at the gable as before.

In this way, the appearance of the building will remain largely unaltered as an unglamorous but historically significant reminder of past industrial activity in the New Town.

In a materials statement, the practice wrote: "The proposed materiality of the additions seeks to respond tonally to the existing structure. The staircase and ancillary additions are formed from brickwork, rendered in a contemporary manner, enabling them to read as a continuation of the existing envelope whilst standing distinct."

Leftover ground on the tight plot, currently serving as an improvised parking spot, will be enclosed behind a matching brick wall with a plinth at the bottom of the stair tower providing secure bin storage.

That's definitely what Edinburgh needs. Another hotel.

Like this but liked the original proposal better, what's the reason for it being pared back?

In the heart of our city's historic fabric, within the confines of a narrow traditional lane, a transformational architectural intervention emerges – a Hit and Miss brick facade and core that revitalizes not only the very essence of the building but also the entire neighborhood. This design, like a breath of fresh air, exhales new life into the area, marrying the past with the future in a harmonious architectural dance.

As we stand amidst the embrace of time-worn buildings, we contemplate the striking contrast of old and new. The Hit and Miss brick facade, with its rhythmic interplay of solid and void, tells a story of the evolving urban landscape. It draws inspiration from the historic essence of the lane, invoking a sense of nostalgia, and at the same time, it boldly embraces the contemporary.

The core of this transformation is not just brick and mortar; it's the very heart of rejuvenation. It breathes life into the lanes, as a dynamic, multi-functional space that welcomes the community. It's a hub of activity, seamlessly blending the traditional and the modern, offering a space for gatherings, commerce, and culture. This core becomes a social anchor, sparking connections and rekindling the community spirit.

The design seeks to reimagine our relationship with history, infusing it with the vigor of the present and the promise of the future. It is a testament to the idea that progress does not require the erasure of the past, but rather the integration of tradition and innovation, forging a path toward a vibrant, sustainable, and culturally rich urban future.

In this architectural statement, we celebrate the power of design to breathe new life into a place, to transform lanes into avenues of possibility, and to honor the heritage that laid the foundation for our dreams. The Hit and Miss brick facade and core are not just elements; they are the embodiment of an architectural vision that carries our history forward, creating a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Arch-Vader, you come up with that yourself?

This is a very nice building why not show the classically styled facade to Dublin Street? This very elegantly connects the robust brick block to the New Town. I hope this us being left exactly as is.
