Ayr goes grey with railway station expansion

Network Rail and IDP Architects have brought forward proposals to extend Ayr railway station, inauspiciously coinciding with a major blaze at the old station hotel.

Proposals call for the creation of a new covered walkway connecting the existing B-listed building to a single-storey extension housing a new ticket office and staff accommodation.

Finished in composite wall panelling and curtain wall glazing the grey build will stand behind an existing steel fence.

The plans follow a severe blaze at Ayr Station Hotel on Monday, disrupting local rail services. Two teenagers have been charged with arson.

Before yesterday's incident, a repair bill of £10m had been broached for structural work alone.

There is no crime of "arson" in Scots Law. The nearest equivalent is wilful fire-raising .

A station should encourage a sense of expectation, civic confidence and style. Not with this proposal!

I'm hoping this is temporary. Was there not talk from NR and ScotRail about moving the bus station to the site to create a bit of a hub for the county? Any new station built shouldn't just be a white and blue shed that most new stations are built like. Should be at least reflective of what was there before. Also, extra space in or outside the station for events. The Air Show and racing attracts a lot of people.
