Surging student demand prompts hotel rethink at St. Enoch

Dominus has become the latest developer to switch out plans for a hotel in favour of student housing as demand for the sector sweeps across Glasgow.

Reworking an existing approval by Urban Innovations architects TP Bennett is in the early stages of developing a design that promises to reanimate the streetscape of Old Wynd and Osborne Street as part of the ongoing denification of the area.

Shadowing another recently submitted student block the latest addition to the St Enoch East site would match the scale of planned development on the King Street car park.

In a statement, the applicant wrote: "... we previously secured planning permission at this site in 2019. That was for a proposed hotel. We recognise that the needs of the city have changed since then, as has our own business. We are now proposing professionally managed purpose-built student accommodation."

A planning application is expected to be lodged in October.

Whisper it........but there's a massive under-provision of student beds in Glasgow, so I'm pretty confident if the planners are happy then this will go ahead - as will the majority of the student halls we've seen on here recently.

Can they plant some trees to hide these truly dreadful streetscapes?

#2 that's partly true but with the huge drop off in overseas students, who else can afford to pay the fees for these lifestyle dorms?

Whisper it........but if there's a huge drop off in overseas students any time soon, there will be a lot of squeeky bottoms in Scot Gov and the Universities. These guys fund the free tuition of Scottish students.

I’m not an architect but these mock up graffix never tell me anything. And is the template of one week student accommodation, next week a hotel, really anyway to realise urban planning on a more ambitious scale?
