Top & tail refurbishment to bring new life to a prominent Edinburgh hotel
July 12 2023
A prominent Edinburgh hotel is in line for significant alterations to the street-level presence and rooftop to accommodate its expansion.
The B-listed Old Waverley is expanding into a parade of retail units on Princes Street, subsuming the space into the body of the hotel above. This will be conducted in tandem with the addition of a rooftop plant to a consented top-level extension.
The Edinburgh Collection has asked CDA to oversee these changes, implementing a previously approved 10-bedroom rooftop extension that will also restore cast iron cresting and finials from the 1883 design.
On top of this, a plant room is to be added to house mechanical and electrical services which will not fit in the basement. A corner retail unit turning into South St David Street will be repurposed as a new entrance, defined by a jet-black canopy. The grander space also permits the inclusion of a reception and lift access, with the main stair brought down to street level.
Modelled on New York's Marlton Hotel the planned works extend to a north-facing lane at the rear, where an external escape stair is to be removed and in favour of an internalised replacement, screened by zinc cladding.
