Saw-tooth homes bring cutting edge design to Peebles

Dramatic change is on the cards for a huge Peebles mill under the ownership of Whiteburn.

The Edinburgh-based property firm has enlisted Smith Scott Mullan Associates to oversee the residential-led transformation of the industrial site, retaining industrial heritage assets and allotments.

Split topographically between high and low-lying land the 'semi-urban' masterplan consists of two-storey houses and a three-floor apartment block embedded within pedestrian and cycle-priority streets. Primary elevations will be finished in reconstituted stone alongside clay stock brick, render and composite cladding panels.

Outlining their design solution the architects wrote: "The existing site is a large mass of mill buildings and associated accommodation, however, one distinct part of the existing building is the sawtooth roof profile. This has been brought into the proposed housing which has a distinctive sawtooth roof design.

"The significant level change of the site’s topography and desire to retain key buildings were also drivers for the eventual layout as this provided a natural break in the middle of the development. It allowed for the plan to be developed in two parts with a link between."

39 apartments mixed with 32 terraced properties are planned for the 2.25-hectare site, leaving a density of 31.6 dwellings per hectare.

Difficult to see how you could get any less 'cutting edge' than these?
