Mixed residential neighbourhood to replace Dundee's Hilltown Market

Springfield Properties, in partnership with Hillcrest, has stepped forward with detailed proposals for a significant residential development at the site of the former Hilltown Market in Dundee.

The developer proposes to build 131 homes for social and mid-market rent at the vacant Main Street site, comprising a mix of colonies, townhouses and flats of up to four bedrooms - 10% of which will be specifically designed for wheelchair users.

Incorporating elements of ground-floor retail the scheme aims to knit the 4-acre site back into the northern fringe of the city centre by arranging three apartment blocks and separate terraces around a central open space.

Outlining their approach the applicant wrote: "A new urban space is proposed along Caldrum Street which will take advantage of the level change and create a lowered space specifically serving the proposed retail units which are contained within the ground floor of Block A apartments. This new urban space wraps around onto Main Street with pavement widening and access steps linking the space."

Unified through a consistent use of brick broken by projecting details and recessed balconies the apartments will employ a partially exposed steel access deck where more than four homes are accessible from a single landing, delineated by enamelled glazed panels.

for Dundee it looks quite good, the proposed shop is quite far back from the street though
