Aldi 'Store of the Future' gives planners food for thought

Discount grocer Aldi is continuing to expand with proposals for a new supermarket at a 3 acre site off Boghall Road, Broomhouse, south of Baillieston.

Embodying Aldi's nationwide rollout of its 'Store of the Future' design the store incorporates a dedicated area for the return of single-use containers, a requirement which sees private staff areas 'flipped' to the front of the building.

In a design statement the applicant wrote: "... the shop front will be largely glazed, an over-sailing canopy will also be provided along the east elevation to protect the customer entrance, trolley and deposit return scheme (DRS) areas. Structured landscaping will also shape the site and inform suitable pathways to the store entrance.

"The building will be clad primarily with two-tone grey trapezoidal cladding panels to provide a contemporary retail unit, appropriate to the local context. This also gives a clean, crisp vernacular and reflects the modern ambitions of the site. An area of vertical timber cladding is presented on the north eastern corner to soften the appearance from the railway underpass, while an area of vinyl graphics  is proposed by the DRS area to both highlight the machine interfaces whilst providing an area of visual interest."

Projekt Architects have drawn up detailed proposals for the store, which incorporate an active frontage to the road as well as extensive landscaping and connections to nearby footpaths.
