Community group seize a golden opportunity at an Aberdeen tower house

Tinto Architecture has prepared plans for a community space and cafe housed within a single-storey extension to Aberdeen's historic Wallace Tower.

Led by Tillydrone Community Development Trust the work will complement efforts to preserve the B-listed 17th-century building and ensure its long-term viability by introducing community uses including a cafe, offices and meeting hall.

Currently, in a state of disrepair and included on the buildings at risk register, the property is to be augmented by a sweeping gold-coloured zinc addition, providing a clear contrast between old and new.

The subservient extension adopts a deliberately low key to minimise intrusion on the main building, described as a unique example of a three-storey Z-plan fortified tower.

Situated in Seaton Park off Tillydrone Avenue the tower was relocated stone by stone from its original placement at Netherkirkgate to accommodate an enlarged Marks & Spencer store.

The plans follow a withdrawn 2021 application for a two-storey extension by Douglas Architecture Ltd & George Douglas Architects.
