Stonehaven estate praised as one of the UK's best

A new build housing estate in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, has come to national attention after being named one of the UK's best new developments.

Dunnottar Park by Stewart Milne Homes earned a Gold award at the Housebuilder Awards for its marriage of traditional design with contemporary touches.

Intended to address the loss of urban cohesion arising from the 20th-century expansion of the town the plans were originally conceived by urban designer Karen Cadell and AREA Architecture before being advanced by the housebuilder.

In a statement, Stewart Milne wrote: "The same palette of materials and duplication of key architectural features provide continuity between the larger and smaller house types and contributes to an attractive and unique streetscape. Differing house types are designed to create strong street frontages, turn street corners, overlook lanes and parks and achieve well-used, attractive and well-supervised public spaces. The level of consideration to the heritage of Stonehaven and the design-led approach to this development makes Dunnottar Park unique."

Key features include strong street frontages and a consistent palette of material including facing brick, dry dash render and vertical board-on-board treated larch wall cladding. Dunnottar Park includes managed parkland within the flood plain of the Carron Water.

Thought it looked pretty good.
Especially as it’s a volume house builder

"the design-led approach to this development makes Dunnottar Park unique" - well it shouldn't. Consistency across dwelling types, and houses that properly turn a corner should be the very least that a development should deliver. This says more about the utterly dreadful standard of most new-build housing than anything else.

Jeezo, if this is the best I dread to see the worst...
