Orkney marine research hub set for £19m expansion

A research and innovation campus on Orkney has hit the ground running with £2.8m pledged for its expansion during its official opening.

Highlands & Islands Enterprise with Orkney Islands Council made the joint announcement at a ceremony marking the completion of the Orkney Research and Innovation Campus (ORIC), completed back in 2020.

Supporting marine renewables the Stromness building provides a space for academic and commercial collaboration, together with co-working spaces to help seed and support related businesses.

The 3.75 campus, designed by ThreeSixty Architecture, occupies the former Stromness Academy and primary school, with both elements now unified to serve as a single hub.

John McGlynn, executive manager at ORIC, said: “With this support we will be able to keep up the momentum from the first phase of redevelopment work at the campus completed late-2020. This funding, along with the funding contribution from the Islands Growth Deal, will allow continued modernisation of the campus to ensure that our existing and future campus organisations have the facilities they need to thrive.”

A further £8m has already been committed by the UK government under the Islands Growth Deal.
