Views sought on Granton gasholder amphitheatre

The City of Edinburgh Council has launched a consultation into its plans to repurpose a Granton gasholder into a waterfront public space.

Views are being sought on how best to utilise the space after securing funding from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund to restore the B-listed frame as the centrepiece of a coastal park.

Part of the 15-year Granton Waterfront masterplan by Collective Architecture the proposals call for a sustainable coastal town to be built with the gasholder standing as the lynchpin of an active travel network and green space.

Early proposals by LUC and Tetra Tech call for an amphitheatre performance space to be built with the outer terraced ring accommodating places for play, exercise and relaxation.

A cafe/exhibition space could be built out with the perimeter as a source of revenue with a sequence of rills channelling water to surrounding terraced gardens.

A drop-in consultation will be held this Thursday at Morrisons, 3 Waterfront Broadway between 12:00 and 18:00 in tandem with an online event. A deadline for comments has been set for 27 February with the aim to deliver the restoration by spring 2024.

Why B listing for pieces of metal?
No longer used for the purpose designed for so just get rid and recycle the steel. Simples!!
No sentiment here for former eyesores Im afraid.
How much money per annum is needed for upkeep and maintenance - where does it come from? Local Government or Lottery funded as well? Too much namby pamby wokery in my opinion.

Great proposal for a landmark of Granton's industrial heritage. Almost like a certain local councillor was listening all those years ago.
