Five-star upgrade to transform prominent St Andrews hotel
November 25 2021
A historic hotel overlooking St Andrews Golf Course is to be refurbished and extended to create a five-star hotel with 51 rooms.
The Scores Hotel was sold to Links Collection Capital and property investors Wirefox earlier this year, who appointed TODD Architects to reconfigure the existing establishment around a five-storey extension to the rear, including a stone and glass entrance with a feature stair connecting to an upper bar and restaurant.
TODD Architects director Andrew Murray said: "Whilst a truly special hotel, it has been subject to a series of unsympathetic and piecemeal changes and additions, leading to many of the lovely Victorian spaces being carved up into awkward shapes with difficult access and many level changes.
"The hierarchy of spaces, dramatic settings and potentially amazing views have been lost. Our aim is to bring it back to its full potential, respecting the existing fabric whilst making sure our contemporary additions sit gracefully within the hotel grounds and the wider conservation area."
Renovations will see rooms enlarged and reconfigured for more upmarket guests and maximise views of the Old Course and the North Sea coastline.
The rear extension will be tucked discreetly behind under a mansard roof with recessed and projecting elements establishing a vertical rhythm. Ground floor areas will include a restaurant and events space with a glazed link connecting old and new elements.
The extension will be finished in buff brick under a metal standing seam mansard roof above a ground floor of reconstituted stone
