B-listed Culdees Castle to live on as an events venue
November 23 2021
Culdees Castle Estates have moved forward with the next phase of restoration at the ruinous B-listed castle in Muthill, Perthshire, with an application for the change of use and alteration to the ruinous building to accommodate an events venue.
One wing of the derelict pile is to be restored, forming a courtyard and external bar serving a marquee pavilion in the grounds suitable for hosting up to 100 people for weddings and parties. This phase of work includes reinstating the scullery and castle kitchen and renovations to an 18th-century chapel.
Longer-term the owners aim to sympathetically restore the entire castle, having already cleared the building of overgrowth and some rubble. As interior fittings have either been removed or severely damaged these will be replaced using replica products and modern techniques where necessary.
In a statement, Culdees Castle Estate wrote: "We have fully restored the courtyard and have replaced the glass roof. We have started work on the internal rooms within the courtyard which will form separate bar areas as part of a new and unique intimate event space.
"We are in the process of renovating the old Pooks Horse Stable into an outside bar. We have so far completed two cloakrooms and have made good headway into the specialist bar areas. (A whiskey bar, craft beer bar and champagne room) and we are now taking bookings for weddings!!!"
As part of these works, an old gas house has been converted into a tea room and small shop catering for visitors and volunteers.
