Meadowbank ire

October 21 2008

Edinburgh City Council have responded to objections from a raft of complainants, irked by proposals to redevelop Meadowbank Stadium and Sports Centre.

Plans under consideration include proposals to build a new stadium and sports centre at Sighthill Park with a second centre in the Meadowbank area.  This would be financed by the part sale of the present Meadowbank stadium for housing.

Miller Homes, Taylor Wimpey developments and Portobello & Currie Community Council amongst others have openly declared opposition.  In addition over 1,600 individuals have lodged protests under the direction of the Save Meadowbank Campaign.

Concerns pertain to the sale of amenity land for housing along with the range and type of services that would be on offer in the redeveloped Meadowbank.

In response to this the Council have stipulated that the current Meadowbank Stadium is no longer fit for purpose and any proposal for redevelopment of Meadowbank will be dealt with in accordance with the special regulations for proposals in which there is a local authority interest.

A hearing session has been arranged for Tuesday 2 December 2008 at The Assembly Rooms, 54 George Street, Edinburgh. The session will commence at 9.45am.
