R&A drive Lethamhill golf vision with additional facilities

The R&A has filed a revised planning application for its community golf facility at Lethamhill, Glasgow.

The updated plans incorporate a newly designed 52-bay floodlit double-decker driving range, a nine-hole course, a short game area and an adventure golf facility in response to market research undertaken since the initial application.

Further additions to further broaden its offer with padel tennis courts, nature trails and public space for pop-up events are also in the works. More than just a golf venue the leisure hub will sit within a network of nature trails connecting with the Seven Lochs Wetland Park as well as a community orchard for growing local produce.

These changes have necessitated that Holmes Miller Architects revisit their approved designs with an expanded main hub building to accommodate a café, retail space, nursery and space for equipment-fitting.

R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers said, “Our aim is to create a destination for golf that is welcoming and attractive to all members of the family and so it was important for us to listen to the feedback being provided about our initial plans in order to refine them and make improvements that will make the venue even more appealing."

Work to redevelop the Lethamhill golf course is already underway with the new facilities expected to welcome the public from spring 2023.

Captain's Log, Stardate 43985.1: We have returned to earth and stumbled across this strange form of structure that has no seeming function surrounded by a sea of small white dimpled ball-shaped objects. We are told by our historians on board that this had something to do with that most pointless but oddly fetishistic of human activities once known as 'golf'.

Slumbers is a very appropriate name for a guy in charge of a golf club.

Dear Whispers, no it's not funny at all. This arcane 'sport' uses up to 2% of land use - an astonishing double the amount of land that housing uses. I only have figures for England and Wales. But, I am sure Scotland will not be far behind. See this article from FT factcheck. https://www.ft.com/content/79772697-54e4-32c9-96d7-5c1110270eb2
