Tollcross tenement infill seeks to avoid 'faux copy' trap

A vacant plot on Tollcross Road in Glasgow's east end is to give way to a mixed development of two ground floor commercial units with six apartments.

Aberdeen-based Cater Group have purchased the land and appointed Neil Rothnie Architecture to draw up plans for the infill block, including a first-floor terrace to the rear.

In a statement, Neil Rothnie wrote: "The building has been designed to avoid the trap of creating a faux copy of the neighbouring block while still using traditional materials...

"The block will fill the entire width of the site and will be four storeys high with a pitched roof over and a gable feature facing Tollcross Road. The overall height, massing, front gable feature and pend access are all informed by the block at 1070 Tollcross Road and will effectively create a strong book-end to maintain the prominence of the tenement building."

Drawing on the historic tenement development pattern of the area the block will employ a combination of buff brick and traditional eaves detailing to fit in.

So they've decided to "avoid the trap of creating a faux copy", but just plumping to design something absolutely horrific instead...i guess that's one way to tackle the problem!
This is genuinely the worst proposal that has blighted this site for quite some time.

What's so bad about a faux copy?

There's something strange going on here. Cater Group appoint Neil Rothnie Architeture and Neil Rothnie is the Planning Supervisor for Cater Group.

Well then! Not sure where to start, so I'll just point out that quite beautiful rear elevation...

That renowned Aberdeen aesthetic finally reaches Glasgow; a city rejoices and...what have you

Ok so high ceilings, large windows, increased footprint and solid build materials are faux and must be avoided; got it. THNX NRA!

Difficult to discern the difference between this and the previously refused scheme. Suspect strongly that another refusal is in the offing.

Neil Rothnie: avoids the trap of creating a faux copy of the neighbouring block

Also Neil Rothnie: *creates faux copy of the next-door-but-one neighbouring block*

That middle top window, though. This isn't Tollcross bad, it's just pure rubbish.
