RIAS name 14 buildings of the year at annual awards

The Royal incorporation of Architects in Scotland has named 14 buildings as the nations best following the 2021 RIAS Awards.

A broad mix of category winners include a training centre for future sporting champions, a temporary museum housing a Charles Rennie Mackintosh masterpiece, and a moveable microhome on the Isle of Skye.

RIAS president Christina Gaiger PRAIS commented: “The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of our built environment to individuals and communities, and the RIAS Awards are a moment to pause and celebrate the incredible difference that architects are making across the country.

"This year’s RIAS Awards demonstrate the critical role architecture can play – whether that is delivering better homes and public services, addressing climate change, celebrating our shared culture and heritage, or simply giving moments of real delight.”

Each category winner will be automatically enrolled for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award to be announced on 30 November.

Award jurors included past president professor Robin Webster OBE, Brian McGinlay of McGinlay Bell Architects and Ann Allen, chair of Architecture and Design Scotland and CEO of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering.

A good spread of high quality projects there - the final decision for the Doolan will be tough for the judges.
