Contour hugging Galashiels homes snake their way through planning

Eildon Housing Association in collaboration with AMP Architects and Will Rudd Davidson Engineers have set out plans for the second phase of a significant housing development at Buckholm Corner, Galashiels.

A four-hectare grassland site has been identified east of the A7 trunk road for 80 homes on steeply sloping land bisected by a watercourse, requiring significant cut and fill work to make it accessible.

Outlining their development proposals AMP wrote: "The topography of Galashiels (steep slopes) provides much of its unique ‘sense of place’ and so the masterplan/layout concept has been informed by what has gone before and served Galashiels well. The predominant local characteristic is of lines of terraced development aligned to follow a contour...

"This is clearly visible across the Gala Water on the opposite side of the valley from the proposed site."

Terraced homes will be finished in smooth buff render above a grey brick base course with feature fibre cement cladding.

'The predominant local characteristic is of lines of terraced development aligned to follow a contour...' - I mean, follow a contour, but this development really just appears to scatter the houses as per the usual poorly-laid out developments. And that mature tree, addressed by rear gardens and a gable, too. Really poor.

Jings.
Quite possibly the worst 'masterplan' I have laid eyes on...

I like the photo realistic renders clearly delivered using BIM Level 2
