Demolition date set for historic Kirkintilloch school

Cruden Building and Coltart Earley Architects are to begin delivery of two blocks of 38 apartments on the site of the former Lairdsland Primary School, in Kirkintilloch's central conservation area.

Led by East Dunbartonshire Council the development will comprise a mix of flats available for social rent as well as shared equity and amenity homes for older people.

Works will also include widened roads, parking, footpaths and a landscaped courtyard opposite the Park Church community centre.

Joint Council leader, Councillor Vaughan Moody, said: "While the demolition of the former school building is necessary, we will ensure its history is preserved. A number of elements from the existing school building will be integrated into the new homes and other items will be salvaged and passed on to Museum Service for a future display on the history of Lairdsland Primary."

Vacated in 2015 following relocation to new build premises the old school, described as being of 'limited' architectural significance by the applicants, will be demolished from April through to the summer. New homes set to be ready for occupation by spring 2023.
