Replacement Girvan primary school set for Spring start

AHR Architects have won planning consent from South Ayrshire Council to proceed with a replacement primary school in Girvan.

The new Sacred Heart Primary on Henrietta Street will take the place of the 143-year-old former school, which has already been demolished, providing accommodation over two levels for a maximum of 125 pupils.

In a planning report, the authority wrote: "The proposed replacement building is contained within the curtilage of the former school grounds and involves the erection of a new, and replacement school building over two storeys."

Approval means Morrison Construction can begin work in earnest this May to deliver the £3.6m building, which should open its doors by August 2022.

Teachers and pupils of the school have relocated to Girvan Primary School temporarily until these works have completed.

Interesting low cost solution -- compare and contrast with other recent school builds !?!

Seems to be missing a classroom -- primary with only 6 classrooms would seem to be an organisational challenge.

Also the facilities look a bit low rent -- a library surely must be included in a 21st century school.

Pretty basic but looks effective -- not a fan of open classrooms but they seem to be the way things are at the moment.

Also the multi use hall looks very undersized with more emphasis on storage than usable space.

Surely it could be expanded with better division without breaking the bank?

Would be interested in seeing the square metre number to understand the budget constraints so that it can be compared to other recent school builds.

At least it is brick and not white render -- the tricky bit will be making sure the brick ties go in.

Picture doesn't support the drawings / layout?
Any feedback?

The picture above is a rendering of the west elevation from Henrietta Street.

Got it now -- South elevation.

The pupil access straight into the open learning area threw me -- not very good traffic management if the first floor classrooms use it to access the playground.

Taking open learning to a whole new level -- only double doors out while the circulation space seems to connect the teachers to the pupil toilets.

Add in the space for the head teacher compared to staff room and you have a number of issues that should have been caught in the drawing office.
