Meadowbank student corridor develops with plans for a further 76 beds

Edinburgh's burgeoning student accommodation market is showing no signs of slowing with plans filed for a further 76 studio apartments at 65 London Road, Meadowbank.

Led by HG Developments and 3DReid Architects the proposal joins a growing flood of student proposals along the corridor, with a further 33 flats proposed on a site immediately adjacent joining a further 377 rooms as part of a major mixed-use development at 151 London Road.

The triangular site is presently occupied by a disused car wash, which will be swept aside to allow a wedge-plan bookend to the urban block.

Dominated by a corner 'turret' feature housing communal areas the latest addition to the streetscape will employ a light speckled brick above a precast concrete plinth - in contrast to the red brick of its immediate neighbour, which is directly connected via a glazed link.

Project designer Ruta Turcinaviciute said: “The planning submission marks an important moment for the future redevelopment of a constrained and complicated site, which will benefit the urban quality of London Road and represent a further contribution to the ongoing regeneration of the wider area.”

The work complements redevelopment of the former Meadowbank Sports Stadium, which is currently under construction.

This is one of those places where the city really, really needs to have a development framework in place. London Road is a traffic sewer, the public realm is absolutely horrible, and there's going to be clearly lots of development along there - let's harness that to improve it.

(And safeguard a tram route - and not just because I want to take one to the beach on nice sunny days. Ding ding!)
