Outer Hebrides distillery to help sate global thirst for whisky

A whisky boom is rippling out to the shores of the Outer Hebridesfollowing the submission of plans for a distillery at Gramsdale on Benbecula.

Uist Distilling Company is to submit plans for the £6.5m plant in a matter of days, tooling up the island to produce a single malt whisky, rum and gin, complemented by an on-site visitor centre and food store.

Designed by Organic Architects the low carbon distillery will showcase signature copper stills behind a fully glazed housing which could be up and running by early 2022.

Director Angus E Macmillan said: "We are working with industry experts to design a spirit production process which is powered by renewable energy sources, this will lower the carbon output of the distillery and ensure we are at the forefront of the whisky industry’s move away from the use of fossil fuels.”

A series of engagement exercises will take place with the public over the coming weeks.

Is this a different company to the 'North Uist Distillery' who recently bought the Nunton Steadings on the Isle of Benbecula?

Where is this company getting all those millions from?
