Lomond Health Care has advanced plans for a 48-bed residential care home at Kirkliston, Edinburgh, to cater for a growing elderly population.

Almondhill House has been designed by Yeoman McAllister Architects to address a shortage of accommodation through the delivery of a purpose-built space promoting independent and small-group living.

A two-acre site off Burnshot Road close to the historic Almondhil House has been chosen for the build, which must discourage feeding or nesting birds owing to proximity to Edinburgh Airport.

Documenting heir approach the architects wrote: "A simple palette of render, stone and timber will create a cohesive and unique style for the development site, creating a sense of place. "We have developed an architectural language we feel is appropriate and applied this to detailed building elements. It is this level of detail which will distinguish this proposal from other developments."

Other key considerations for the design were barrier-free access, extension of a pedestrian walkway from a nearby housing development to the town centre and 'garden to plate eating' to improve the wellbeing of residents.
