Wavegarden ripples out with Union Canal footbridge

Engineering firm Sweco has authored plans for a shared-use pedestrian cycle bridge spanning the Union Canal to improve connectivity to the adjacent Edinburgh International Climbing Centre.

Wavegarden Bridge is being built by the city council ahead of the delivery of the titular surf park and will plug directly into the national cycle network 12 miles west of the city centre.

The single-span structure would be finished in weathering steel supported by stone-clad concrete abutments, maintaining 3.2m clearance above the canal for navigation purposes.

In a design statement Sweco wrote: “The proposed structure is to be a single span, simply supported steel beam footbridge comprising of weathering steel main longitudinal girders with weathering steel cross beams and plan bracing, supporting recycled plastic of timber effect deck planks with a non-slip surfacing.”

Located in a Special Landscape Area the bridge design seeks to minimize tree loss with wildflower seeding and climbing plants included in the landscape design.
