Springburn’s lost Burgh Hall is to welcome 49 new flats and a commercial unit following an agreement between NG Homes and Cruden to press ahead with the £7.2m build, due to complete by 2021.
Chameleon Architects are once again behind the revised scheme, which now respects the tenement line along Keppochill Road following comments from the Glasgow Urban Design Panel requesting that the ‘verticality of the tower block’ be reduced.
This sees the height of flanking blocks raised through the addition of double-height glazed boxes while cornice lines aligned with adjacent tenements and the C-listed Springburn nursery.
In a design statement detailing the revisions Chameleon wrote: “Depth is formed in the facades through the expressed brick grid with a full brick reveal to the windows and an infill brick on a recessed plane. The vertical elements of the grid reflect the colonnade to the Springburn Halls.
The B-listed halls were demolished over Christmas in 2012 over fears it had become a health and safety hazard - although salvaged stone statues have been retained with the intention that these be reinstated as part of a community statue garden within the local area.
