GRAS Architects have filed the first planning application for The Quaich Project at Princes Street Gardens, a small-scale refurbishment of three B-listed park shelters dating from the 1950s.

The City of Edinburgh Council owned shelters are the only structures within the park which afford protection from the elements and are set within the steep embankment of the Waverley valley’s north side overlooking West garden terrace.

In later years however the shelters have become a focus for anti-social behaviour prompting moves to enclose the space with glazed timber screens together with new windows and doors with exterior alterations revealing the original concrete cantilevered roof.

Outlining the need for change the architects wrote: “Over recent years, the shelters have become something of a focus for antisocial behaviour, especially after dark, and are commonly used by the homeless. As such, they are affected by vandalism and abuse, now being stripped down to their bare essentials, with no glazing, only a few remaining benches and regular re-painting being necessary to keep them in a barely presentable state.”
 
New flagstones will also be installed externally and internally to create an access ramp.

‘Require regular repainting’

Then they propose images with crisp white walls. White walls don’t work in public spaces, it would be a nightmare to keep clean.
