Aberdeen marks start of long-heralded Union Terrace Gardens revamp

Aberdeen City Council has marked the ceremonial commencement of works to transform Union Terrace Gardens ahead of work getting underway in earnest next month.

The £25.7m project seeks to improve accessibility to the landscaped valley by introducing lift access from Union Terrace and reinstating a ‘grand staircase’ from Rosemount Viaduct.

The first tangible sign of progress will see a slip road closed off to allow the first of three new pavilions to be built as well as work to improve drainage and the erection of a ‘permanent safety structure’ on Union Bridge.

Council co-leader councillor Jenny Laing commented: “Union Terrace Gardens is among the city's best-loved places and it was vital we got this project right in every detail. That takes time – but it has been time well spent and we are about to be rewarded for the hours of extensive community consultation and diligent design work.

“The sympathetic regeneration of Union Terrace Gardens will ensure it remains a unique and enduring feature of our city centre, accessible for all to enjoy, and the start of work is another sign of the momentum building throughout Aberdeen during a period of incredible transformation.”

The latest plans for Union Terrace Gardens have been prepared by LDA Design and follow the abandonment of an ambitious £140m overhaul at the hands of Keppie and Diller Scofidio & Renfro.

Balfour Beatty will take possession of the site from 9 September with the completion of all works anticipated by summer 2021.
