Former Yorkhill school playground earmarked for 30 homes

A playground belonging to the former Kelvinhaugh Primary School, now West George College, has been earmarked for 30 two and three bedroom flats instead of 100 studio flats under new plans filed by Ryder Architecture.
Intended to establish a new urban block the project is located on the corner of Gilbert Street and Teviot Street, the revised bid for consent takes the form of an L-plan build topped by an external deck area and landscaped terrace.
Detailing the intended appearance of the build in a planning statement the architects wrote: ‘The main body of the facade is defined by recessed brickwork which have an asymmetrical relationship to the windows. There is a higher ratio of brickwork to glazing to underline the residential character of the proposal.
‘The fourth storey is set directly above the cornice datum of the adjacent former Kelvinhaugh Primary building. Here the facade line steps back to further respond to the adjacent corner. A cut out the corner of the facade reinforces the relationship to the former school building.’
Brickwork recesses will add depth to the façade with contrasting charcoal composite timber/aluminium windows.
