The former Corstorphine Hospital in Edinburgh is to be transformed into 76 apartments following submission of plans by Sundial Properties and Michael Laird Architects to convert and extend the existing buildings.

An appraisal of the site grounds has led Laird’s to propose fashioning 32 apartments within the refurbished hospital joined by an additional 44 new build homes within the grounds.

The C-listed hospital itself will be ‘sensitively’ restored with the removal of a crude winter garden which replaced a period colonnade sometime around the 1960s, enabling a double-height collonaded structure of anodized aluminium and glass to be inserted.

Outlining their approach to the new build elements Michael Laird Architects wrote: “Materially the buildings are ashlar coursed stone with narrow joints. A thin aluminium horizontal band divides the stone and storey heights to create individuality for each apartment.

The glazing is anodised aluminium framed with clear glass. The top floors or penthouse level are a combination of aluminium anodised panels and glazing. These floors contrast with the ‘stone base’ creating the ‘roof scape’ and termination to the sky.”

Contemporary additions have been conceived as subservient in their mass, height and materiality, to the main hospital building.
