Harndec Flooring celebrates their 40th year in business

July 11 2008

This year, Harndec Flooring are celebrating their 40th year in Business. The company was registered in Scotland on the 19th of August 1968 and remains a wholly owned Scottish company, as part of the Westcrowns Group.

Working in Partnership with the main players in the construction market, Harndec developed their business throughout the years to meet their customer’s needs. Their growing involvement in PPP (Public Private Partnerships) since 2000, when they were awarded the largest flooring contract in Scotland to provide the flooring solution for the New Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, reinforced their position as flooring supplier of choice in Scotland. To this day, Harndec Flooring has successfully completed more flooring contracts within PPP projects than any other company in Scotland.

Carrying out in excess of £5 million pounds of flooring contracts per year, Harndec directly employs 75 people. A significant proportion of them has started with the business at an early age and has been trained by the company, learning not only their trade but also the company values and culture.

Ronnie McDonald is the best illustration of this statement. Today’s Managing Director of Harndec Flooring, he started working for Harndec Flooring on its date of creation. After serving his apprenticeship as a floor layer, Ronnie was progressively promoted from foreman, to contracts supervisor and became Contracts Director in 1993 and Managing Director in 2003.

The management team is complemented by Alisdhair McIndoe, Harndec’s Commercial Director, who oversees the estimating and surveying departments as well as assisting clients with initial budgets, life cycle costing and cash flows. After graduating with a BSc in Quantity Surveying, Alisdhair commenced his career in Private Practice in 1987 and continued to work with National Quantity Surveying practices until 1994 when he joined Harndec. Alisdhair has considerable experience on projects ranging from £150,000 to £14m.

In addition to this strong management base, Harndec Flooring can call upon its wealth of experience: from John Carson, Procurement Manager with 40 years in the industry and who joined in 1972; from Bobby O’Brien, Contracts Manager with over 33 years in the industry and who joined in 2002; from Danny Cawley, Contracts Manager with 22 years in the industry and who joined in 2006; from Adam Murray, Contracts Manager with 22 years in the industry and who joined in 2008; from Scott Barclay, HNO qualified surveyor who joined in 1999 and from our newest recruit Steven Morrison, estimator who joined in 2008.

To face an ever growing activity, Harndec has recently started a tailored-made training programme. Working in partnership with Scottish Enterprise, South Lanarkshire Council, Routes to Work South and John Wheatley College, a number of unemployed locals were recruited in November 2007 for a 12 week introductory floor laying training programme. Following the success of this first training programme, a second one is currently on-going. The new recruits have joined Harndec’s fitting teams on some prestigious projects (New Victoria Hospital, Addiewell Prison etc).

2008 is an important milestone for the business, celebrating 40 successful years in Business and great opportunities for the future. This anniversary will be celebrated at Glasgow Ra
