£6.5m Stromness research hub given all-clear
Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Orkney Islands Council have formalized their support for a £6.5m research and innovation hub in Stromness, Orkney, to facilitate growth of the islands’ renewables, energy and low carbon industries.

This clears the way for a planning application to be filed for a 3.75 acre campus on the site of the former Old Academy and Stromness Primary, both of which will be refurbished and extended for their new role.

The development brief calls for a consistent use of materials and a contemporary design which is robust enough to weather the island’s harsh climate.

Councillor James Stockan, chair of the council’s development and infrastructure committee said: “By adding in the former primary school, and modernising both buildings, our aim is to create a 21st century centre of excellence in a stunning setting, overlooking the harbour in Stromness.”

It is hoped that a start can be made on-site before the year is out.
