New lease of life for B-listed Edinburgh offices
Morgan McDonnell Architects have submitted revised plans on behalf of Square and Crescent for a residential conversion and extension of 235 Corstorphine Road, a B-listed former Barnardos building.

This will be converted to form nine flats with a further 22 homes built to the rear of the site, an increase of one from a prior consent and now including a single storey extension to the rear of the existing offices to maximise daylight into ground floor apartments.

In their design strategy the architects observed: “The modern architectural expression proposed for this extension complements and contrasts with that of the listed building. Expressed as two zinc clad portals with frameless glass balustrading above, a connection is set up with the architectural language of the new building it faces which in turn informs cohesiveness across the site.”

On car parking to the rear three consented new build blocks have been reduced to two, with the upper section of each aligning with the orientation of the listed building
Externally the former Barnardos offices will remain largely unaltered

New build elements will be clad in red brick and dark zinc with painted timber infill panels

"The modern architectural expression proposed for this extension complements and contrasts with that of the listed building........"
In the immortal words of The Princess Bride. "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Mud, for example, will usually just about 'contrast' with anything. Not so sure about 'complement' though. Maybe a pig? It's kinda brown and grey too.
