Union Hanover Securities are to press ahead with their second Urban Villa branded hotel in Scotland on Aberdeen’s John Street, part of a nationwide roll-out of the chain that includes a planned establishment at Edinburgh’s Fountainbridge.

The £35m development has been designed by Covell Matthews Architects and will incorporate a Tesco store and restaurant in addition to 182 rooms on the site of a demolished granite tenement block. This will be replaced with a new build block of equivalent scale replacing it, screening an internal courtyard to the rear.

In their design statement Covell Matthews stated: “The John Street elevation has been carefully modelled to create visual interest and will be finished with high quality materials. Granite panels, glass, grey powder-coated aluminium panels in varying shades are used to articulate the façade.

“The elevation at first floor level is set back to the west end to enhance the modelling of the facade and this then continues up to meet the set-back façade of the upper level. The set back at the upper level allows for an open terrace area to be introduced which will be bounded by a glazed balustrade.”

A four-and-a-half star rating is being sought for the hotel.
