Café plan approved for disused Kelvingrove toilets
Plans to refurbish a disused public toilet block to form a new coffee shop and community hub have been given Glasgow City Council's seal of approval.

Masterminded by Cameron Webster Architects of BeanYet the plan would overhaul the disused public convenience on Eldon Street, next to Kelvingrove Park, whilst introducing a new roof terrace and free mobility scooter hire service.

Welcoming the proposals Audrey Gardner, chair of the Strathclyde group of the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland welcomed the proposals, but called for a window in the main façade to be reconsidered.

Gardner wrote: “Considering the location and area where this building is placed, it is important to keep the vertical rhythm in the existing construction. That is why we suggest studying the possibility of adding some elements that could help to respect these proportions in the main opening without altering the objective of the project.”

Delivery is penciled in for the summer.

I like this type of re-use. In Edinburgh they converted some of the old police boxes into coffee stops which helps enliven the streetscape. Also in Berlin, one of the most famous hamburger 'joints' is an old coverted toilet. `more of this please.

I am a fan of this scheme, this would further support the restoration of KG bandstand.

Great ! An innovative proposal, with employment benefits and handy for the Park users. On my bike commute too.

Personally I'd prefer a place to pee.

......and will they somewhat ironically charge customers to use their toilet like the converted toilet at the other end of the park?

@ 5. That doesn't make money though Charlie so unless we're all prepared to pay higher taxes then you'll have to buy a biscotti to use the toilet.
