Alumno complete work on Partick student residential build
Alumno Developments have completed their latest student housing venture at Dumbarton Road, Glasgow, two years after winning planning permission.

Faced with blonde sandstone, dark brick and zinc the scheme offers 174 rooms and ground floor retail, presenting alternating ‘shoes of stone’ to break up the buildings mass from the street.

In a design statement Carson & Partners said: “The principle idea for the site, in terms of both programme and massing, has been to treat the design as a series of defined blocks which vary in scale according to context .

“The strategy behind the placement of the block on site has been developed to reinstate a unified and coherent streetscape to the old Comet site block providing a strong edge to Dumbarton Road / Keith Street and Walker Street.”

A rooftop amenity deck has also been created for use by residents.

I walk by this fairly often. It's not bad, but the brown brick infill is quite an odd choice and feels out of place. Otherwise I've certainly seen worse student housing.

A good well treated corner block and of significantly better quality than the embarrassment of 'luxury' apartments known as 'The Observatory' featured on Urban Realm on 6 Aug!

'A rooftop amenity deck has also been created for use by residents.'

That'll please local residents. Drunk students out on the rooftop at 2am Saturday morning..

I really like this. The scale is good with the adjacent tenements but when you look down Hyndland Street it looks like it should be higher as it terminates the vista.
Best new building I've seen in the west end for a long time - lets hope other student housing currently under construction is going to be of this quality?

For the residents opposite this building has become a nightmare of light, noise, congested traffic and slamming taxi doors... so much so that during term time it's impossible to sleep.

Derwent Students, who manage it, couldn't care less.
