Maxi Construction have been awarded a £2m contract to build the second phase of the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, following completion of the Bill Scott Sculpture Centre.

Financed by a £3m Arts Funding Prize for Edinburgh (provided by an anonymous donor) the Creative Laboratories will take the form of a single storey pavilion incorporating sculpture bays, project spaces, café arranged around a concrete courtyard complete with its own foundry.

Designed by Sutherland Hussey Architects and David Narro Associates the scheme is situated on old railway sidings in Newhaven and is intended to create a cultural hub, dedicated to research and production.

Maxi Construction's managing director, John Aitchison, commented: "Maxi Construction is looking forward to working with Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and the project team in delivering an exceptional facility for the Scottish visual arts industry."

The project is scheduled for completion in June 2014.
