Portobello kindergarten wins approval
Plans to erect a new kindergarten on the Portobello beachfront have been approved by Edinburgh City Council, clearing the way for redevelopment of a Toddlers Hut dating from 1930 – thought to be the oldest independent childcare facility in the UK.

Designed by Konishi Gaffney, whose son previously attended the playgroup, the scheme will entail replacement of the single storey timber hut with a two storey split gabled building which plays on the language of beach huts.

As such a materials palette of recycled & reclaimed brick will be employed together with celestory glazing with timber cladding used on the upper floor.

Ground floor areas will be given over to play spaces with sliding glass doors leading to an enclosed Japanese inspired garden and above this a kitchen and storytelling space will be created.
A landscape strategy devised by Horner & Maclennan has been conceived to replicate the arrangement of promenade, beach and seafront.

A curved corner detail provides more generous pedestrian space and allows for insertion of a large curved window at childs height with views out across the Firth of Forth.

Love wee Porto- great area- this will make a fantastic addition to the shoreline, especially considering the blue box there right now.

Fantastic stuff. I'll be taking detours on my bike to see this going up, a great new addition to the prom.
